We’re very excited to add another horse to our herd! Here’s Lilly, a 19 year old buckskin Quarter Horse cross. Lilly was days away from heading to a less than reputable dealer (and potentially up to Canada for slaughter) but she is much too nice of a horse! Lilly is pretty darn quiet but has a couple quirks that we’ll need to work through before she’s fully in the program.
On her second day here she and I went for a little walk up the road (despite crazy gusts of wind) and on our way back there was a tree down right across the road which took down power lines and caught fire and was smoking a TON! We were really lucky that it had just rained (enough to consider building an Arc) the day before- there could have been a lot more damage. Did Lilly care about the giant smoking tree? -Nope! She followed me through my neighbors back yard and through unfamiliar fields to get back home; she didn’t look at a thing, was super respectful and got tons of treats when we got back.
For now, we’ve started Lilly on Adequan (basically a miracle drug) to help with the stiffness in her hocks and she’s moving much more happily! She’s even helping Ana learn how to lunge! For now we’ll focus on getting ANY muscle on this lady! She’s been sitting in a field doing nothing for the past two years and it shows. We’ll be moving very slowly but hopefully in the spring she’ll be totting around some of our kids!
